Why ZoneSJ?

Why do we need a new zoning bylaw?

"The draft zoning bylaw strikes a balance between where we are today and where we are trying to get to in the future."

The City must adopt a new zoning bylaw that conforms with the municipal plan, PlanSJ.  When PlanSJ was adopted by common council in January 2012, a new land use map was adopted and conflicting and incompatible land uses identified.  ZoneSJ, the zoning bylaw, will establish provisions and regulations that implement the policies set out in PlanSJ.

Why is it so important?

"It's about creating vibrant and secure neighbourhoods where residents feel safe to live, work, play, invest and stay."

Changes to the zoning bylaw aim to:

  • stimulate and support economic investment
  • protect neighbourhoods and grow their potential
  • sustainably manage service costs
  • foster environmental stewardship
