The Saint John Police Force (SJPF) would like to advise the general public that it is an offence under the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act to leave your vehicle unattended and running with the keys in the ignition.
On January 3rd, 2013, there were three vehicles in the Saint John area that were reported stolen as a result of leaving the keys in the ignition. Two of the three vehicles reported stolen had the ignition running due to the extreme cold temperatures outside and owners/operators were trying to keep their vehicles warm. All 3 vehicles have been recovered but at a cost to each of the owners.
Saint John Police Force wishes to remind the public that doing such an act could result in costs associated with receiving a fine for the breach of the Motor Vehicle offence(s), costs associated to towing/storage of their vehicle and other related costs.
That leaving keys in vehicle’s ignition has the potential to become extremely dangerous to the public and the police when attempting to apprehend vehicle theft suspects and fleeing stolen vehicles.
These crimes are easily prevented – Lock it & Pocket the key!
