What are the categories?

Nominations will be accepted in five categories.  

Outstanding volunteer contribution in an organized sport or recreation organization

This individual can be a teammate, parent/guardian, loyal fan, unpaid organizer/administrator, official or any person who voluntarily contributes to an organized sport or recreation team/ or league whose operations support active and healthy lifestyles.

Outstanding volunteer contribution to a community development initiative

This individual volunteers for a community organization whose goal is to strengthen individuals and engage the community through the provision of goods, services and/or use of facilities.  This individual donates their time to ensuring the safety, vibrancy, and improved quality of life in their community/neighbourhood.

Fundraiser of the year – Sport & Recreation

This individual can be a teammate, parent/guardian, loyal fan, unpaid organizer/administrator, official or any person who has made an extraordinary effort to raise funds that assist a sport team/league/ or recreational facility whose operations support active and healthy lifestyles.

Fundraiser of the year – Neighbourhood & Community Development

This individual has made an extraordinary effort to raise funds that directly  assist a community organization whose goal is to strengthen individuals and engage the community through the provision of goods, services and/or use of facilities.  

Corporate Sponsor Award

This company has demonstrated an outstanding level of support (financial, volunteer resources, promotional) to a sport, recreational or neighbourhood development initiative.  (This company must be nominated by the organization(s) they support.  Nominations from the company itself will not be considered).

Who is eligible?

  • Nominee must not receive any monetary gain from his/her contributions.
  • Volunteer contributions must be delivered to a non-profit organization.  Commercial, for-profit and/or private clubs are not eligible.
  • Majority of organization's activities must be conducted within City of Saint John limits to the benefit of its residents.
  • Groups must be active within at least one season (2 consecutive months+).  Annual sporting and recreational events (ie. annual marathons, festivals, championships, etc.) are not within the scope of these awards.
  • Volunteer service must further the mandate of Leisure Services to improve the quality of life and well-being of citizens either by:
  • supporting active, healthy lifestyles through the use of sport fields, arenas, parks, gymnasiums, playgrounds, beaches, community centres and other public facilities;
  • creating vibrant communities and promoting a good quality of life through the delivery of programs and facilities that strengthen individuals and engage people in shaping the future of their community.
Note: As this is the very first awards ceremony of this nature, outstanding contributions over the past two years will be considered (ie. April 2009 – April 2011)

How will the winners be selected and recognized?

A selection committee will review the submissions and select the winners.  They will be recognized in April at an event held during National Volunteer Week.
