Definitions

Alignment: Ensuring that everything that we do contributes to achieving the community’s vision.

Accountability: Our responsibility to provide an open and honest explanation of our results—the progress we are making towards achieving our goals.

Assets: Anything the City owns that has a monetary value including land, buildings, computers, equipment, vehicles, roads, and pipes.

Commitment: Represents our promise to the community, Council, employees and each other in working together to achieve our goals.

Corporation: Represents the administrative component of the City of Saint John that supports the development and execution of policy decisions made by Council.

Council’s Priorities: Represents the goals that Council has set, for the duration of its term, in support of achieving the community’s vision.  These goals provide direction to staff and the City’s agencies, boards and commissions in the delivery of service.

Framework: A defined set of processes or practices that are used to address or solve complex issues.

Infrastructure: The built environment that includes such things as roads, pipes, buildings, ball fields, or arenas that supports the delivery of service.

Innovation: Incorporation of new ideas and methods to address matters related to people, process, and technology.

Mission: A statement of the role of the City of Saint John as an organization, and its purpose.

Performance Measures: An indication of the progress the City has made in achieving its goals and objectives.

Principle: Adopted rules, practices, and processes that guide our thinking and decision-making.

Sustainability: Making decisions that allow us to meet the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet the needs of tomorrow.

Technology: A generic term that refers to any device or process that is used to increase or improve our capacity to learn or work .

Transparency: Our ability to openly communicate with the public—ensuring the public understands how decisions are made and the results of those decisions.

Values: Beliefs or principles that guide staff in working together to deliver service that meets the needs of the community.

Vision: A clear and concise statement of the desired future.  There are two visions; one for the community (created by the community) and one for the organization that describe what each will look like when we achieve our goals.
