On July 14, 2010 Saint John Common Council awarded the tender for the construction of a new facility for the Saint John Police Force.
The facility will be built in Peel Plaza, the area bordered by Hazen, Union, Peel, Carleton, and Wellington
streets. Peel Plaza will be home to a new justice complex,
containing law courts currently under construction by the Department of Justice of the Province
of New Brunswick and a three -story (one underground) police facility
will be built by the Saint John Police Force. The two complexes will be
joined by an underground tunnel as well as a surface plaza. A parking facility, will be built by the Saint John Parking Commission on the escarpment off of Carleton Street. Attention has been
paid to adding public green space and to preserving as much of the
City’s built heritage as the development will allow.
The
dedication of Peel Plaza, was hosted
on October 20th, 2008 by Mayor Ivan Court. The proper naming of the site
as Peel Plaza recognizes the importance that this new complex with have
on the work carried out by the Saint John Police Force and the New
Brunswick Department of Justice, while also paying homage to Peel Street
in the center of the development, which was named in honour of the
"Father of Modern Policing" — Sir Robert Peel.
