No matter what the weather calls for, there is a group of wellness enthusiasts from the Fundy region who are determined to get folks moving this winter. The 4th annual Winterfest takes place in Greater Saint John from January 31 – February 9, 2014.
“The main objective of Winterfest is to promote wellness through winter activity,” says Greg Cutler, the City of Saint John’s community coordinator. “It’s not a flashy carnival – it’s a grassroots approach to promoting winter activity in the region using the parks, facilities, and local resources that provide yearlong opportunities for wellness.”
A partnership of municipal and provincial recreation, health and education representatives from Greater Saint John make up the Fundy Wellness Network. Together, they coordinate public events throughout the year to promote a healthy lifestyle.
The Winterfest schedule includes everything from the Pavilion Cup Pond Hockey Tournament to library crafts for children and seniors bingo.
“Winter is not just for those who skate, ski or snowboard,” adds Cutler. “Physical activity is only one component of wellness. Recreational, social and cultural activities all contribute to wellness at any age.”
A community fair dubbed ‘Warm Up to Winterfest’ will take place the weekend prior to Winterfest. Also hosted by the Fundy Wellness Network, Warm Up to Winterfest will feature over twenty information booths, along with interactive games, prizes, health snacks and entertainment for the entire family. Free to the public, the event is held in the Atrium of Market Square on Sunday, January 26 from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
A preliminary schedule of events can be found at www.fundywinterfest.ca. Events continue to be added.
