Heritage Awareness Program hits City streets

07-May-2009

The history and architecture of four Saint John neighbourhoods will take the spotlight this May through a series of walking tours and community meetings led by David Goss, local master storyteller and historian. The events are part of the Heritage Development Board’s Heritage Awareness Project.

“The history and architectural excellence of our city ranks with the best in the country,” says Jim Bezanson the City’s Heritage Development Officer. “We think this is one of the best ways people can experience it.”

Featured neighbourhoods are: Mount Pleasant Area, the Lower West Side, the Old North End including Indiantown, and the South End Peninsula towards Courtney Bay. Property owners in these areas are encouraged to submit their building to be included in the Registry of Historic Places.

Beginning with the Mount Pleasant area on May 10th tours will be given on consecutive Sunday afternoons from 2 - 3:30 pm. On the Wednesday evening following each Sunday walk there will be a community meeting from 7 - 9 pm near the same area as the walk. This is an opportunity for people to see photo displays and share stories and information about their historic homes. Residents are encouraged to bring photos, especially older ones.  Members of the Heritage Development Board and City staff will be available to explain the difference between the Registry of Historic Places and owning a building in a heritage conservation area.

The complete schedule can be found on the City’s website in the Public Meeting section.
