The City of Saint John will host Inclusive Community Days in conjunction with the Rick Hansen cross-Canada Relay, which arrives in Saint John on Sunday, October 2 for a four-day stop.
Beginning at 9:30 am, the City will host Recreation Your Way, a pre-registered event that allows individuals with disabilities and their family and friends to participate in various recreation, sports and leisure activities. Motivational speaker, entertainer and athlete, Terry Kelly, will speak at a luncheon for participants and will perform later in the afternoon during the public events.
Celebrations open to the public begin at Rockwood Park on Sunday afternoon, with free recreational games, musical entertainment, and trolley rides beginning at 1:30 pm. A free barbecue will take place at 3:00pm with the Rick Hansen Relay scheduled to arrive in the Park at approximately 3:30 pm. Local disability advocate, Jeff Sparks, will be honored as the final medal bearer. Official ceremonies begin at 4:00pm, with a celebration cake ending the day’s events at 5:00pm.
On Monday, the City will host an Ability Awareness Fair in Market Square from 9:30pm – 1:30pm. At noon, citizens are invited to watch a wheelchair basketball challenge, with NB Canada Games team, the Saint John Mavericks, with special guest players from Saint John High School, St. Malachy’s High School, and the Saint John Mill Rats. The activity will take place at the Market Slip Volleyball Court.
The Rick Hansen Relay will be departing Saint John on Wednesday morning, with a brief stop at City Hall with Mayor Ivan Court at approximately 10:00 am, before departing for Oromocto.
Motorists are reminded to anticipate traffic delays on Sunday with both the Run for the Cure and the Rick Hansen Relay taking place, as well as on Wednesday morning as it makes its way west from the uptown.
