Residents asked to use caution on ice surfaces

The City of Saint John and the Saint John Fire Department remind citizens that the ice conditions on the City’s lakes and rivers may not be safe.

The snow acts as an insulator, keeping the cold temperatures from freezing the surface. As well, milder days have taken their toll and weakened the ice in many places.

The Saint John Fire Department responded to an incident where a snowmobile broke through ice on the St. John River. The rescue was difficult, and very dangerous for responders, who also broke through the ice during the rescue.

Skaters, walkers and skiers using Lily Lake in Rockwood Park are asked to stay within the ice area maintained by City crews. City officials are marking known weak spots with barricades.
