Saint John Community Arts Board seeks nominations for second biennial Arts Awards

It is no secret that Saint John is home to some of this nation’s finest artists, artisans, and arts volunteers. Many people who shape our community, inspire our nation, and touch the world make Saint John their home.

First launched in 2010, alongside the Saint John 225 festivities, The Originals/Les Originaux Arts Awards Gala took the port city by storm.  Under the artistic direction of PUNCH Productions, the 2010 awards gala was a knock-out success. Sold out and praised for its innovation, The Originals/Les Originaux 2010 was awarded Best Arts Infusion, at Uptown Saint John’s Life Live Awards. Thankfully, it is again time to recognize the accomplishments of our arts community! The Saint John Community Arts Board presents, once again under the artistic direction of PUNCH Productions | Judith Mackin, The Originals/Les Originaux 2012.

This year nominations are a two-step process. Once nominated, candidates will be notified by our committee, and given the opportunity to pursue or decline the honour. Candidates interested in pursuing their nomination will be provided with criteria instructions, and asked to submit an application package for review by an independent selection jury.  The selection jury, made up of members of the community, will review and select all award recipients.  Selection will be based upon the nominee’s quality of performance or body of work, with a focus on the last two years - 2010 and 2011. Nominees must live or work in the greater Saint John area, which encompasses the City of Saint John, and the Towns of Grand Bay-Westfield, Rothesay, and Quispamsis.  Nominees who won awards at The Originals/Les Originaux 2010 will not be eligible for nomination in the same category this year.

The Originals/Les Originaux 2012 Saint John Arts awards will take place at Imperial Theatre on Thursday, May 31st.

For more information or to nominate an individual or group (self-nominations welcome!), we encourage the community to visit www.saintjohn.ca/theoriginals Nomination forms will be available for completion online or download on Tuesday February 14th, 2012. The committee will accept nominations at the City’s Cultural Affairs Office, or online, until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 21st, 2012.

The Originals/Les Originaux was created to recognize and celebrate the importance of arts and culture in strengthening our community. Please join us once again, as we publicly recognize the important roles our artists, artisans, and arts volunteers play in enriching our lives.
