Statement regarding Mayor and Council attendance at meetings of the West Side Ratepayers Association

18-Apr-2018

Given that litigation has commenced in the form of a proposed class proceeding against the City on behalf of owners and occupants of properties in West Saint John who had their water source changed, members of Common Council have been advised by counsel that it would be inappropriate for them to attend any meetings of owners and occupants of West Saint John or their representatives. Each member of council has an obligation to consider the interest of the entire community when making decisions and acting in his/her official capacity as a representative of the City.

As an alternative, owners and occupants of West Saint John or their representatives may request the opportunity to make a presentation to council using the appropriate process available to all citizens under municipal legislation.

The City of Saint John takes the concerns of the owners and occupants of properties in West Saint John seriously, as it does for all citizens of the City. The City’s investigations are continuing and the City is actively updating its west side water webpage with information as it becomes available.

This statement is being issued to inform residents and occupants of West Saint John and has also been provided to members of the West Side Ratepayers Association.
