The Saint John City Market has been
honoured as Canada's Great Public Space for 2013. The title is awarded each
year as part of the Canadian Institute of Planners' (CIP) Great Places in
Canada contest and is based on popularity and planning excellence, as judged by
a panel of professional planners.
“The City Market is a historic centerpiece
of our revitalized city centre and
embodies what we all love most about Saint John,” said City of Saint John
Mayor, Mel Norton. “For over a century, it has been a place where friends and
neighbours meet to enjoy food and wares from around the world.”
CIP holds the
Great Places In Canada contest every year to celebrate the locations that
Canadians love most, and to highlight the role of professional planners in
creating places that inspire and delight.
thrilled that our City Market has been nationally recognized as Canada's Great
Public Space,” said the City Market
Manager, Kevin Loughery. “We have the public to thank. Our entire Saint
John community as well as friends and visitors from across Canada were the
driving force that placed us in a finalist position.”
The Saint John
City Market was one of 68 entries vying to be named in this year's contest.
Finalists were selected from more than 100,000 public votes cast across the
country during a four month voting period that closed on September 23, 2013.
Teresa Rittemann, a CIP panel judge,
noted in a press release that the City Market is a cultural and historic icon.
“Its unique architectural character reflects the local landscape and traditions
of Saint John as a port city. It provides year-round economic opportunities and
social interaction for people of all ages and abilities, fosters local food
security, and promotes the use of public and active transportation in its
interconnectedness with the rest of the city.”
