Over five hundred seniors filed in to Exhibition Park
today to take in the annual Spring Fest activities. Participants enjoyed live
entertainment, bingo, games, cash prizes, and a lunch complete with strawberry
shortcake for dessert.
“Springfest has grown
from about two hundred participants annually to well over four hundred in the
past couple of years,” says Leisure Services coordinator, Helen Bridgeo.
“Tickets sell out well in advance of the event.”
Springfest is one of over a
dozen events held throughout the year for seniors in Saint John. The City of Saint John, through its
community enrichment programme, interacts daily with over 26 seniors
clubs. The City acts as a liaison among the various clubs, providing
meeting space, event coordination and financial support of various events that
engage our seniors in wellness activities.
Bridgeo attributes the growing
popularity of the events to a more active and aware senior population.
“Seniors are living longer and becoming more and more aware of how to stay fit
and well. It’s more than just being physically active – it’s about
overall wellness of the mind, body and spirit. Getting out and
socializing with friends is just as important to maintaining a healthy
lifestyle at any age.”
The sold-out Springfest 2012
took place Thursday, April 5 at Exhibition Park
from 12pm – 3pm.
