The Saint John Police Force is reminding drivers to drink
responsibly and drive safely this holiday season.
Plan ahead and think about how you’ll get home, whether you
plan on drinking or not. Use a designated driver, take a taxi, or call Operation
Red Nose. If you have to leave a vehicle, keep the winter overnight parking
restriction, which affects most of the City of Saint John, in mind and find an
off-street spot or an exempted street. If parking Uptown, use a parking lot
rather than a metered space, as there is no parking in metered spaces (with an
individual meter or a Pay-and-Display machine) between midnight and 7 a.m.
If you’re hosting a party at home, make arrangements for
guests and have options available for them to get home safely.
Operation Red Nose operates Fridays and Saturdays in
December. The volunteers will arrive at your location, and a designated driver
and navigator will drive you and your vehicle home safely. The service is free,
and is available on a first come, first serve basis from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., with
the last rides before 3 a.m. Call 693-6810 on December 16, 17, 22 (Thursday),
23, 30 and 31, or visit operationrednose.com to learn more. You can also follow
Operation Red Nose on Twitter at @ORNSaintJohn.
The Saint John Police Force will be performing spot checks
throughout the holiday season, as well as targeting known areas of concern for
possible impaired drivers. The minimum penalty for an impaired driving offense
under the Criminal Code of Canada is a one-year driver’s license suspension, a
$1500 fine and possibly three days in jail.
