City
of Saint John crews are working diligently to keep streets and sidewalks
passable for our citizens. Putting the snow removed from driveways and walkways
onto the right-of-ways is a violation of the City By-Law “A By-Law Relating to
the Public Streets in The City of Saint John and to Prevent Certain Nuisances
in the said City” with a penalty of between $200 and $500.
“We
would like to have the cooperation of property owners and private snow plow
operators,” says Kevin Rice, Deputy Commissioner of Municipal Operations.
“Don’t place the snow from your property onto City sidewalks and streets. We
work hard to keep the streets and sidewalks safe, and snow pushed onto an
otherwise clear street could cause an accident.”
Snow
plowed from a driveway onto a sidewalk will force pedestrians onto a street. Additional
snow placed on sidewalks and streets slows down or prevents the clearing of
public infrastructure, which impacts pedestrians and motorists and increases
the cost to provide these City services. This activity is also a
violation of the City By-Law “A By-Law Relating to the Public Streets in The
City of Saint John and to Prevent Certain Nuisances in the said City” with a
penalty of between $200 and $500.
