The area bordered by Hazen, Union, Peel, Carleton, and Wellington streets will soon be home to Peel Plaza,  a new justice complex, containing law courts built by the Department of Justice of the Province of New Brunswick and a three -story (one underground) police facility will be built by the Saint John Police Force.  The two complexes will be joined by an underground tunnel as well as a surface plaza. A 500-car parking facility will be built on the escarpment off of Carleton Street and will be connected to both buildings. Particular attention has been paid to adding public green space and to preserving as much of the City’s built heritage as the development will allow.

The dedication of Peel Plaza, formerly  known as North of Union, was hosted on October 20th, 2008 by Mayor Ivan Court.  The proper naming of the site as Peel Plaza recognizes the importance that this new complex with have on the work carried out by the Saint John Police Force and the New Brunswick Department of Justice, while also paying homage to Peel Street in the center of the development, which was named in honour of the "Father of Modern Policing" -- Sir Robert Peel.
