Tips to Ensure Your Holiday Season is Merry

Fri November 22, 2019

Shopping is a huge piece of the Christmas season and the Saint John Police Force is offering a few reminders when you are out and even online.

Always try to park in well-lit areas. If you are making multiple stops, try to put your purchases in a trunk, make sure you lock your vehicle and do not leave spare keys inside the vehicle. Be aware of your surroundings and always keep your belongs close to you. Make sure the PIN for your debit and or credit cards are protected at all times. Keep track of how much you spend and if you notice anything strange with your banking information, report it immediately to your credit card company or bank.

Online shopping is convenient but there are steps to protect your identity. Closely monitor all of your financial accounts and sign up for text or email alerts if the institution you bank with offers them. Do not open emails from unknown senders or click on links to “deals” that seem suspicious. Install the latest version of your Internet browser to avoid security holes. Spam emails and bogus websites often contain typos or spelling and grammatical mistakes, so watch for those signs.

Try to be home when you know packages are being delivered or arrange for someone to pick them up. Keep in mind, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is. Have a safe and happy holiday and all the best in 2020 from the Saint John Police Force.
