Crime Prevention

Protect Yourself

• Stay alert! Always be aware of your surroundings.

• Walk everywhere with a sense of purpose - show you are calm, confident and know where you are going.

• Trust your gut! If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave.

• Inform others where you are going and check in with them when you reach your destination.

• Carry your purse firmly and close to your body, or only carry what you need in your pocket (e.g., a small amount of money, keys, one credit card).

• Keep your wallet in an inside coat or side trouser pocket rather than your back pocket, which is easier for robbers or pickpockets to access.

• Park in well-lighted areas that will be well-lighted when you return. Be sure to lock your car doors.

• If you jog, do not jog alone or in isolated areas.  Take a friend, or your dog, along for the run.

• Have your car or house key in your hand as you approach the door. If attacked use the keys as weapons!

• While driving, keep doors locked and windows rolled up.

• Drive in well lit and well travelled areas.  Determine the safest route and take the long way to your destination if it is the safest.

• If you suspect you are being followed, make a visible show of writing down the licence plate number.  Drive to a police station or open business.  Do not drive home if no one is there.

• Do not hitchhike and never pick up hitchhikers.

• If you have car trouble on the highway, raise the hood and display a "Call Police" sign in the window.  If a motorist stops to assist, remain in your vehicle with your doors locked.  Speak through a slightly lowered window and ask the motorist to get help.

• If you see a motorist in distress, do not stop to help them yourself.  Call the police, (506) 648-3333, from the nearest telephone and tell them the location.

Please call 911 for Emergencies or 648-3333 for non-emergency immediate assistance.
