Boil water order update and emergency shut off notice

Residents in the affected areas of Champlain Heights and Forest Hills remain under a Boil Water Order today. Customers impacted by the order were hand delivered notices yesterday evening.

Saint John Water was successful in maintaining the delivery of water to Champlain Heights and Forest Hills customers overnight, and have been filling the water storage tank in Champlain Heights to ensure that it is full before repairs can commence on the large 24 inch cast-iron transmission main.

Once the Champlain Heights storage tank is filled this evening, work will begin to repair the broken water transmission main. In order to complete the work safely, Saint John Water will have to shut down a watermain that travels over the broken transmission main so that crews are not working under a large live watermain. This shut down will result in a water outage for some customers in the Forest Hills area. The emergency water shut off will begin at 8:00 p.m. this evening, December 14, 2016 and last until approximately 7:00 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2016. Notices are being hand delivered to customers impacted by this shut off.

The area impacted is that of Forest Hills presently under a Boil Water Order. The streets are listed below.

Mountain View Drive, Civic #’s 120 – 236
Vista Ridge Crescent
Candace Street
Lynn Avenue
Kelton Street
Beverly Drive
Kennington Street

Affected customers are asked to draw water for their daily needs prior to the shut down time.

Provided the emergency repair work proceeds as planned tonight, crews will flush the water system tomorrow and we will get the first round of water samples followed by the second set of water samples on Friday. Considering this, the earliest the boil water order could be lifted for the areas of Forest Hills and Champlain Heights would be Saturday evening, December 17, 2016Customers will be notified when the order has been lifted.

We thank customers for their patience. We will continue to provide citizens with updates on the situation as work progresses.

For further information, please contact Saint John Water at 658-4455.

What happened?

The current means to fill the Champlain Heights water storage tank is compromised. For this reason, an alternate means of filling the water storage tank must be used to ensure customers in the Forest Hills and Champlain Heights areas maintain access to water. The alternate means of filling the tank requires a boil water order be issued to the areas identified above.

The Department of Health has advised Saint John Water late this afternoon to impose a boil water order to all the addresses listed above. This notice is being hand-delivered to affected users.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those in the affected area who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand.
