Citizens asked to prepare for heavy rain and wind tomorrow

Residents are asked to prepare for a weather system that is expected to bring heavy rain and wind to our region tomorrow. Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm are expected but local amounts may be higher. Additionally, easterly wind gusts of 70 km/h or higher are likely and may reach warning criteria of 90 km/h for exposed areas.

The City’s Transportation and Environment Services crews have prepared trucks with road barricades and signage today and will continue to clear major catch basins and drainage gutters across the City. Saint John EMO will also monitor the weather and respond if necessary.

What you can do to help

• Help clear neighbourhood catch basins and gutters that may be covered in leaves, garbage and other debris. Keeping them clear will provide better drainage for stormwater.
• Use caution and be safe when at beaches and around other coastal areas.
• Reduce driving speeds, keep headlights on, observe all posted signage and barricades and avoid any area that is covered in water.
