(Saint John, NB) The City of Saint John and the Saint John Community Arts Board awarded funding to twenty-four local arts and cultural organizations through its annual Community Arts Funding Program. Mayor Don Darling was joined by Board Chair, Darren McLeod, to present the cheques at a ceremony held today at the Saint John City Market.

“These grants will support local organizations who contribute to the artistic and cultural richness of Saint John,” said Mayor Don Darling. “The arts play an important role in making our City an attractive place for citizens and visitors.”

A total of $51,400 in grants was awarded by the City of Saint John and the Saint John Community Arts Board.

This year marks the 14th year for the annual Community Arts Funding Program. The program was established in 2006 by the Saint John Arts Board.

“Our Board is pleased that the City of Saint John supports the funding of arts and cultural projects that will directly benefit the people of Saint John,” said Darren McLeod, Chair of the Saint John Community Arts Board.  “There is truly something for everyone in the 2019 projects, from workshops and outreach, to festivals, murals, and inclusive public events. We have an exciting year ahead.”

Members of the Saint John Community Arts Board are appointed by Common Council.  The Board was established by Common Council in February 2003, in recognition of the expanding role that arts and culture play in the broader social, economic, and educational fabric of Saint John. The Board is supported by the City’s Arts and Cultural Coordinator.
