City of Saint John Honours Fundraising Sisters with Freedom of the City

The Friars Sisters joined the prestigious ranks of the Freedom of the City on Monday night. The sisters were honoured during a surprise presentation by Mayor Don Darling and members of Common Council at the 15th Annual “Let’s Celebrate” Concert at the Imperial Theatre.

The Freedom of the City is an honour bestowed on esteemed members of the community, visiting celebrities, dignitaries or organizations for their outstanding community service. It is the oldest and highest honour granted by Common Council and is reserved for those of honourable distinction.
Bette Vincent, Darlene Friars, Barbara Walker, Heather Stilwell, Wendy Youden, Jane Dalton, Lynn MacDonald and Tracy Friars were recognized for their exceptional fundraising efforts and support of local charities.

Over the past fifteen years of sold-out concerts, the Friars Sisters have raised over $1-million. The funds have supported charities such as Safe Harbour, MindCare New Brunswick, Horizon Health Network, the Alzheimer’s Society, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, and the City’s five priority neighbourhoods.
