City of Saint John pleased with acknowledgement from Provincial Government during budget speech

11-Mar-2020

The City of Saint John thanks the Provincial Government for the acknowledgement and support offered during yesterday’s 2020-21 budget speech. A number of direct mentions by Finance and Treasury Board Minister Ernie Steeves addressed Saint John’s unique situation, acknowledged the leadership shown by the City during this time, and reaffirmed the Province’s commitment to meaningful municipal reforms needed to put the region on a path to growth and sustainability.

“We see this as another step forward in our collaborative approach to achieving the goals set out in the Provincial report, Sustaining Saint John - A Three-Part Plan,” says Saint John Mayor Don Darling. “Our long-term sustainability is the most important conversation for us to have, not just as a government but as a community. The stage has been set, government leaders have made commitments and, through action, the needle is now moving.”

The City of Saint John has been a strong advocate for provincial reforms, including property tax reform and greater regional collaboration, and is working to control costs within the delivery of municipal services. Success in these areas can be achieved by working in collaboration with the Province, municipal workforce and broader region.

“Our love for our city is what we all share. If there was ever an opportunity for the Saint John region to develop into its full potential, it’s now,” adds Darling.
