City prepares for Hurricane Dorian and urges residents to do the same

06-Sep-2019

(Saint John, NB) The City of Saint John and Saint John EMO are preparing for potential effects caused by Hurricane Dorian that is making its way up the Eastern seaboard. The system is forecast to begin Saturday, late morning and last until early hours of Sunday.

Total rainfall amounts of 60-80mm are expected before the rain ends overnight Saturday night or Sunday morning. City crews are clearing and maintaining drainage paths and preparing barricades and equipment to be used in the event of flooding. Residents are advised to check eaves troughs and drainage swales, as well as catch basins or ditches on or near their property for debris. Residents are also advised to safely secure and/or store outside furniture and other loose items.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Motorists are advised to use caution when driving and to observe barricades in the event of road closures.

City arborists will be available to address any safety issues resulting from downed trees and branches. If damage is widespread, the focus will be on using heavy equipment to push trees and branches off of the streets and addressing clean-up and removal in the following days.
Citizens are reminded to stay away from the shorelines and beaches for their own safety. High winds can cause heavy wave action and unpredictable currents, as well as erosion.

With a localized flooding risk and power outages possible, Saint John EMO recommends having your home 72-hour emergency kits ready to go.
