City reminds motorists to slow down in school zones

10-Sep-2019

With the school year now underway, the City of Saint John wishes to advise motorists of recent speed limit changes. The speed limit in most elementary and middle school zones within City limits has reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h in accordance with the Province of New Brunswick’s amendment to its Motor Vehicle Act

The new 30 km/h default school zone speed limit is in effect in all City school zones, unless otherwise indicated. Some City streets have specific school zone speed limit signs of 40 km/h.

Slower vehicle speed allows more time for motorists to react to crossing school children, reduces the distance required to stop a vehicle and reduces collision severity.

Fluorescent yellow School Zone and School Zone End signs identify school zones. Speed limits in school zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on school days.
