City will maintain select sports fields to a playable level this summer

09-Jun-2020

A phased approach to re-opening and maintaining fields will involve minor community involvement

Following the most recent update to the City’s 2020 financial status completed on June 1, Saint John Common Council has approved the restoration of some additional services, including a phased approach to maintaining a select number of sports fields to a playable standard by early July. City crews will focus maintenance efforts at three District Field complexes: Shamrock, Memorial and Forest Hills. A fourth crew will maintain a select number of fields beyond district complexes as well as at the Allison Grounds District Field complex.

The new operating model will include only minor community volunteer maintenance options.  User groups are expected to develop Operational Plans as per public health guidelines before they access the fields.

The first stage of re-opening will ensure select fields are inspected and meet basic safety requirements. Instructional signs related to COVID-19 public health guidelines will be installed. Fields are expected to become accessible to users in mid-June. Fees will not be charged during this stage. During this stage, community volunteers may assist in clean-up of garbage, any dirt on the fields, and general tidying.

By early July, the second stage of field maintenance will meet playable standards, including the preparation of mounds and infields, field lining, and a more frequent mowing schedule. Fees will be charged during this stage as the fields will be ready for game play. Community volunteers may assist with garbage pick-up and some of the disinfecting and cleaning work of frequently touched surfaces, particularly at non-district facilities.

The City of Saint John wishes to thank our sports field user groups and the community for their shared commitment to delivering sport and recreation activities to citizens.
