Come explore Saint John, by boat! More boaters can now tie up in uptown Saint John as Market Slip increases its dock space

Step off your boat and into the energy of a vibrant port city. When you dock in uptown Saint John, you are seconds from fine dining, pubs, cafés, shopping, markets, galleries, and more.

With dredging work now complete to increase water depth at Market Slip, the City of Saint John now has increased dock space for small pleasure crafts to drop anchor on the Port Saint John side of Reversing Falls.

As of Friday afternoon, July 17, the docks have been set in the water, each approximately 30’ long, adding more space for several pleasure crafts. The docks will remain at Market Slip until the end of the boating season in the fall.
“Saint John has an active and thriving port and is the only city on the Bay of Fundy, flanked by two incredible river systems,” says Mayor Don Darling.” Market Slip has been a key entrance point into the city for centuries. It makes sense to have a more accessible docking area that continues to welcome residents and visitors into our city to dine, shop and enjoy all the treasures uptown Saint John has to offer.”

The Market Slip area was last dredged in 2004. Since that time, sediment had built up from natural siltation, meaning the City could only deploy three of the docks intended for Market Slip due to the limited depth.

This spring, approximately 3,000 m3 of material was removed from the area as a result of a partnership between the City of Saint John and Port Saint John, each funding 50 per cent of the initial cost. Dredging began in May and took approximately four weeks to complete.

“We are grateful to Port Saint John for their continued support and partnership,” adds Darling.

Port Saint John has partnered with the City and has generously committed to completing the maintenance dredging of Market Slip for the next 12 years.

“On behalf of the RKYC Flag Officers, executive and members, I would like to congratulate all those who championed to have Market Slip dredged, and welcome the sight of the expanded dock system back in place, says Heather McBriarty, Commodore, RKYC. “Our city and rivers attract many visiting boaters. We look forward to enjoying a sail on our beautiful Bay of Fundy and having the convenience of coming back to Market Slip and the vibrant uptown bars and restaurants.”

“We at Port Saint John are excited to have space available for recreational boaters at Market Slip,” Added Jim Quinn, CEO, Port Saint John. “This location is ideal for accessing the vibrant Uptown core and opens another access point for people on our shared waterfront.  Our partnership on dredging the slip for this use fits with our ongoing commitment to support the community.”

Dock Installation
