Dorchester Street open to two-way traffic as of Sept. 2nd

Motorists in Uptown Saint John are advised to prepare for changes to traffic patterns in the Union, Coburg, and Charlotte Street area in the City centre. On Monday August 30, Saint John Common Council approved a number of changes to the City’s traffic by-laws. The changes will take effect Thursday, September 2.
Dorchester Street between Carleton Street and Union Street in the City centre will be open to two-way traffic, with no on-street parking. Left turns from Dorchester to Union will not be permitted.  Wellington Row will be closed temporarily to thru traffic for construction for approximately 2 months.
The traffic changes are the result of water and sewer infrastructure upgrades in the area and construction of the new Saint John Police Force Headquarters. Peel and Hazen Streets were closed earlier this year.
Motorists are encouraged to take public transportation, carpool or to consider flex hours to ease congestion on these streets. Motorists are also encouraged to access Union Street at the viaduct or Crown Street.
Traffic studies conducted in the area indicate that peak morning travel hour for the uptown area occurs between 8 am and 9 am.  The total vehicles entering the uptown during this peak hour is somewhere around 3,500 vehicles, but over the entire two hour morning rush (7:30 – 9:30 am) the number is 5,000 to 6,000 vehicles.
