Introducing Emera New Brunswick Field at Shamrock Park

The field at Shamrock Park will be getting a facelift thanks to a $500,000 contribution from Emera New Brunswick. The project includes installation of an artificial turf field and a new lighting system.

“We are happy to be supporting this worthwhile project,” says Christian Richard, General Manager of Emera New Brunswick. “Access to a turf field like this one helps to encourage a healthy active lifestyle throughout the community, and that’s something we want to be a part of.”

In 2012 officials from Emera approached Saint John Common Council with the interest of investing in the field. Staff worked with Emera to define the general terms of a funding agreement and the necessary commitment from the City of Saint John to make this project a reality.

“Emera New Brunswick has been making significant investments that are contributing to the quality of life here in Saint John,” said Mayor Mel Norton. “These investments strongly align with Council’s priority of making Saint John a community of choice.”

The total cost of the project is $1.5M. The City has allocated its funding in the 2014 general fund capital budget. The project is consistent with the Shamrock Park Master Plan and is supported by the principles of both Plan SJ and Play SJ, the City’s draft recreation strategic plan.

It will improve the quality of the 137m by 60m field for the wide range of activities that historically have taken place at this location and will increase the amount of available playing time – both in terms of an increase in the length of season and an increase in the intensity of use.  Artificial turf fields may also decrease the day to day maintenance required.

Once completed, the field will be renamed Emera New Brunswick Field at Shamrock Park. The project is expected to be completed by the end of August 2014.
