Plumbing Permit Fee Waived for Water Softener Installations and Rebate Program in Effect

The City’s plumbing permit fee required for property owners who choose to install water softeners will now be waived. On April 9, 2018, Saint John Common Council approved an amendment to the City of Saint John Plumbing By-law to temporarily remove the permit fees associated with the installation of water softeners and backflow devices (when applicable) and approved a rebate program retroactive to September 14, 2017.

Residential customers typically pay a total of $85 (base fee of $65 plus 1 fixture fee of $20) for the permit. For commercial establishments, the fee is $105 ($65 base fee plus 2 fixtures). Effective immediately, customers will not be charged these fees when applying for a permit. Customers who have paid the permit fee since September 14, 2017 will be mailed rebate cheques over the next six to eight weeks. This is an automatic process that does not require any action from customers.

The Plumbing Permit Fee Rebate Program for the installation of water softeners applies to all City of Saint John residents and will be in effect for all permits issued from September 14, 2017 to December 31, 2019.

Customers are still required to obtain a permit for a water softener installation (and backflow devices as applicable). A City plumbing inspector checks for correct, code-compliant installation.

Customers can obtain a permit at the One-Stop Development Shop on the 10th floor of City Hall during regular service hours.  For more information, please call 658-2911.
