Reminder: Building and development services are available virtually through the City’s One Stop Development Shop

17-Apr-2020

Those thinking about applying for a project requiring a permit, or looking for development, planning or building information, are encouraged to reach out to the Saint John One Stop Development Shop. All construction requires a permit, except those projects that are exempt by the building by-law. More information is available here.

The One Stop Development Shop is offering its full suite of development and building services to residents and businesses via phone or digitally. This includes planning applications, permits and virtual inspections. The team is well positioned to provide digital service as this delivery method has been available since 2017.

When absolutely necessary, in-person inspections respecting all requirements set out by the New Brunswick State of Emergency Declaration, can be performed.

More information about The One Stop Development Shop virtual services is available here.

At the April 16 meeting of the City’s Growth Committee, Deputy Commissioner of Growth and Community Development, Amy Poffenroth, reported that building permits for the first two weeks of April 2020 (13 building permits, valued at $475,000) are down from the first two weeks of April 2019 (25 permits, valued at $2.9 M); however, there are currently two projects totalling $2.5 M under review. The City has also issued a number of plumbing, development, demolition and excavation permits.

Early indications are that large-scale projects, including developments in the Central Peninsula, East side and Millidgeville are proceeding.

It is expected that Planning Advisory Board (PAC) and Heritage Development Board (HDB) meetings will resume in May, respecting any provincial requirements regarding the State of Emergency.
