Request for proposals issued for Loyalist Plaza redesign and Fundy Quay Harbour Passage extension

21-Jul-2020

Develop Saint John has issued a new Request for Proposals for the redesign of Loyalist Plaza and the extension of Harbour Passage around Fundy Quay.

The request is the third in a series that show important progress on the Fundy Quay development project.

“Loyalist Plaza is arguably the most important public space in Saint John,” says Steve Carson, CEO of Develop Saint John. “There are a lot of factors that must be considered by those interested in bidding: the finished product must be cost-effective to implement, it must be complementary to the larger Fundy Quay project, it must be accommodating to the communities’ needs in the short and long term, and it must be inspirational, creating an exciting and distinctive sense of place for visitors and locals alike.”

A previous proposal for revamping this space was issued in 2013, but the design proved cost-prohibitive, and the project did not proceed.

Much has changed since then, including the completion of the Central Peninsula Neighbourhood Plan, the finalization of the development agreement for Fundy Quay, and the fact that our major festivals have outgrown the available space at Loyalist Plaza.

“Ideally, if we could bottle the creative, people-centered feel that is growing in Uptown Saint John, and make that come to life in Loyalist Plaza, that’s what we’d like to see,” says Carson. “It’s a fantastic opportunity.”

The proposal was issued on the City of Saint John’s website, and interested parties have until August 6 to submit their responses.
