SJEMO Update: Efforts to clear the broken pipeline have been successful, agencies now focus on cleaning the spill, and residents remain evacuated


Crews worked throughout the evening and continue the operation today to purge (clear) the four-inch broken butane line. The operations is ongoing and close to completion. SJEMO and responding agencies have a high degree of confidence in the process they have taken to clear the line as a means to mitigate any further risks associated with the pipeline.    

As a next step, a multi-agency approach is being taken to finalize the plan to clean-up the spilled material on the ground. The process is highly involved, and will be carried out in a way that protects the safety of those involved as well as the general public. Further details on the plan will be available as they are confirmed and implemented. 

The safe re-entry into local commercial properties and homes remains a priority. As the clean-up progresses and safety inspections are undertaken, residents and tenants will be notified of their ability to safely enter their homes and businesses. An exact timeline for re-entry is not available for all properties at this time. 

Addresses that have been safety tested and deemed safe for re-entry include:

430 Bayside Drive (Industrial Security)
380 Bayside Drive (CFM Building)
2 First Street East (Old East Saint John School)

City plows have been dispatched to clear and salt the roads around these facilities to allow for safe access.  

Evacuated residents have not returned to their homes. We will continue to provide residents and the media with updates as they are available. 

Bayside Drive from the Courtney Bay Causeway to Red Head Road remains closed to through traffic until further notice. SJEMO is aware of the significant impact this has caused to traffic in the area and thank motorists for their continued patience. 

Incident responders continue to test the air quality in the area. Until it is confirmed to be safe for re-entry, affected residents will remain evacuated from their homes and accommodated at a local hotel.
