Superheroes in Training Across Saint John

Superhero capes may have to replace the brightly coloured t-shirts summer recreation staff traditionally wear.  The City of Saint John has teamed up with Sport New Brunswick and the Province of New Brunswick to deliver Superhero training to its summer recreation staff.  For over 25 years, the City has delivered a free Summer Playground Program for children ages six to 12.  The week prior to the start of the program, summer staff undergo training to learn everything from beach safety to First Aid.  They also learn the fundamentals of engaging children in active play throughout the day, learning various activities and games.

This year, summer staff will participate in the new Superhero themed training delivered in partnership between Coach NB, Recreation NB, Physical Literacy NB and local host organizations.  The Superhero themed training aims to deliver three nationally recognized workshops in one day. The goal is that the leaders or coaches who take this training have all the necessary tools and skills to deliver quality programs and purposeful experiences for all the kids they work with, therefore, becoming superheroes for all those kids.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our recreation staff,” says Lori Lambert, coordinator of the City’s Summer Playground Program.  “The Summer Program’s objective is two-fold.  We aim to provide a quality program that encourages physical activity for children throughout the summer.  In addition, we want to provide a valuable work experience and skill development for our summer staff.  The Superhero Program helps us to check both of those boxes.”

Eighty-five participants will receive Superhero training in Saint John this week alone, including the 25 summer staff from the City of Saint John’s program. The City’s Summer Playground Program begins June 26. Information and registration is available at www.saintjohn.ca/playgrounds
