The incident on Bayside Drive is stable, affected residents remain evacuated while the response continues

The SJ-EMO and responding agencies and organizations, including the Irving Emergency Response Team, remain on scene at the site of yesterday afternoon’s butane leak on Bayside Drive. The priority for all operational crews and responders remains public safety and environmental protection. The leak has stopped and the site is stable. All spilled material is contained to the immediate area.
The focus of the operation today has been to safely remove any remaining material from the pipeline and clean the butane that has accumulated on the ground. Equipment is being assembled to complete these operations in a manner that is both safe and efficient. Mobile air monitoring is continuing to ensure the surrounding area remains safe.
Incident response personnel, including members of the Saint John Police Force and Saint John Fire Department, are in place and prepared to respond immediately if necessary. At this time, the material is contained and the site is stable.
For the safety of the public, and as a precautionary measure, the site and surrounding area remain closed to public access while clean-up operations are underway. Barricades are in place to detour traffic from the area. Bayside Drive remains closed to traffic from the Courtenay Bay Causeway to Red Head Road. The public is asked to plan their travel accordingly, and avoid the area so that responders can continue to work safely.
Thirty-five homes in the immediate area were evacuated yesterday and approximately 65 residents have been accommodated at a nearby hotel. The evacuation remains in place. The number of homes evacuated is not expected to increase. Residents affected by the evacuation can contact the Canadian Red Cross by calling 1-800-222-9597 for updates.
Homes affected by the evacuation include:
All homes on River Avenue
All homes on First Street East
All homes on Second Street East
66-72 Spruce Avenue

Further updates will be provided as they are available.
