Winter parking rules in the City of Saint John – what you need to know

Our crews work hard around the clock during the Winter months to keep our City streets safe and accessible for citizens and first responders. We ask all residents to stay informed and do their part to ensure that we are able to get the job done as safely and efficiently as possible.

Residents are reminded that on-street parking is allowed during the winter months, unless a parking ban is called by the City, or unless otherwise prohibited by on-street signage and the Motor Vehicle Act.

In the event of heavy snowfall, one of two overnight on-street parking bans may be declared by the City to allow crews unobstructed access to clear the streets.

The two parking bans are referred to as the “North, East and West (N.E.W.) Temporary Overnight Parking Ban” and the “South Central Peninsula Temporary Overnight Parking Ban”
The City will advise the public through www.saintjohn.ca, local media, Facebook and Twitter when either ban is declared. To receive notifications direct to email, you can sign up to receive City News. You may also call the parking ban information line at 658-4040. Should a ban be declared, the City’s website, telephone information line and local media will all be updated by 3:45p.m. on the same day.
In the event of a parking ban, it is the responsibility of citizens to secure off-street parking and to seek information when the bans are declared.

To prepare, we encourage you to make alternate off-street parking arrangements in advance of the first snowfall. For those living in the South Central Peninsula, a number of lots will be available, free of charge through the Saint John Parking Commission, to allow for off-street overnight parking access. The lots include:

Corner of Princess Street and Canterbury Street (entrance on Canterbury Street)
Corner of Duke and Sydney Street
Peters Street
Carmarthen Street (Vineyard Church)
Mecklenburg Street at Wentworth
Corner of Charlotte and Queen Street at Key Industries (entrance on Queen Street)
Water Street at Coast Guard (behind Coast Guard building)

We thank citizens for their cooperation as crews work hard to clear the snow and keep our streets safe.

Snow clearing operations are managed in accordance with the City’s Winter Management Plan.
